RO – Lori when start your passion about sneakers and where was the first time
You’ve bought your first pair?
LORI - Honestly, I’ve been into sneakers since before I can remember. My mom says I was into my footwear since I was about two. My sister tells a story from when we were six (she’s my twin), and she got some new low tops. She got home all excited, until I shook my head as if to say “not cool!” Of course back then I wasn’t buying my own kicks, just waiting alllllll year for my mom to buy me my next pair.
RO – Today approximately how many sneakers do you have?
LORI - These days I have about 70-80 pairs, a pretty diverse mix, with a slight leaning towards my passions for old school kicks and high tops. I try to stay away from the whole “exclusive” over-hyped kicks, and find my own look just by hunting shops and eBay.
RO – Where and why do you have the idea to build a website about female sneaker fiends?
LORI - I had the idea in 2004, and the website went live in mid-2005. I started to see all this growth in the online sneaker community, but it was really male-centered. So I thought if females had our own site, we could really represent. And we have! It’s been a great way for us to find each other and build our community, not to mention show the rest of the world that they can’t sleep on the ladies!
RO – Today how many ladies are present in the crew?
LORI - Well, a handful of ladies directly help on the site, but a whole crew of females represent on it. We have over 20,000 members, over 3 million page requests monthly, and we’re growing all the time. There are thousands and thousands of girls who love their sneakers, and more and more of them are finding the site. It’s been a really positive experience for all of us.
The site has also grown based on members’ interests, like “women in the industry” interviews were a response to so many members wanting to get into the sneaker industry, our “cityguide” was a response to girls wanting to know where hot sneaker spots were that respected women and included smaller sizes, the blog and petition were started by members, the upcoming internships page was done by a member, etc. etc, So the site is really by, for and about the ever-growing community of female sneaker fiends.
RO – Did you expect the success of the website that time?
LORI - Truthfully, I knew there were tons of us female sneaker fiends out there, but I had no idea how the site would do. I know a lot of girls who love sneakers but who hadn’t really been a part of the online sneaker community before FSF, so it’s been a cool bridge for them to get into the world sneaker community. I didn’t know anything about running a website before FSF, so I didn’t know if I’d succeed at all! I’ve learned a lot, and I still wish I knew so much more…
